At the moment I think a lot of it is about class insecurity and concerns about children's futures. This doesn't explain what was going on post-WWII Baby Boom though. Maybe when everyone was home in the burbs with some sort of support network it was easier in some ways?

You'll find it interesting as a mom, but also from the publishing side. We should chat about it (and books of its ilk, which I find fascinating that they end up book-length).

Ok, I should clarify that because I obviously thought it (and breastfeeding has already severely impacted by lifetime earnings, I am sure)... Was trying to say it costs no dollars now, but does cost time. Oh, Lord, lots and lots of time.

This kid can't sit still, that's ridiculous. I think Carston would do better now. I love your take on this. My only complaint: as someone married to an economist, how can you say that breastfeeding is free and time consuming. Time is money, baby! :)

I was looking forward to your thoughts on this. This is an excellent article. I wish everyone would read it and stop making this such a big issue (whatever "this" is). I have not yet read Bringing up Bebe, a fact I find shocking for many reasons. Must rectify asap.

Amen. I think the sometimes-desperate grabbing at labels and categories and strict advice is just one manifestation of the generalized anxiety and insecurity our country seems to feel about motherhood. Don't you? To trust one's instincts (and those of one's child) and to pick and choose from the various "philosophies" out there what works for an individual family requires a degree of confidence that seems to elude many Americans. What I'm not sure about is why. xoxo

Oh, Hilary - I love this. There are large passages of "It's a Boy" that bring me to tears, and, as you know, I often feel keenly the responsibility of helping raise a good man. I'm so grateful to have you as a companion on this particular journey. xox
